Improvement in Programme and Project Management and Delivery Capability

The Situation

An High Street bank wanted to improve its Programme and Project Management and Delivery Capability before it embarked on a refresh and upgrade of its infrastructure underpinning its online banking service.

The Task

The infrastructure consisted of hardware and software some of the core software dating back circa 50 years. The bank wanted to adopt where possible an Agile approach to both Project Management and Project Delivery. The nature of the business required that some of the older more critical elements of the infrastructure required a traditional Waterfall approach while newer implementations were more suited to an Agile response.

The Action / Approach

To meet the brief it was necessary to develop a Hybrid Waterfall/Agile method that met the banks needs without creating a significant resistance to change amongst the 3000 strong project delivery community.

Once the method had been developed, documented, agreed and signed off by the Banks SRO training courses and delivery schedules had to be developed and delivered and its success monitored and ratified.

The Result

Face to face training was delivered to the 300 most senior Project Management staff. These training sessions being videoed in order to provide online training sessions to support the senior staff's efforts to cascade the new methods to the remaining community.

Feed back obtained on subsequent follow up activities showed that approximately 70% of staff had adopted the new methods with subsequent project elapsed time from inception to delivery showing a 50% improvement and quality of the delivered software project showing an estimated 80% drop in reported defects
